Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 88 is the darkest of the lament psalms. Heman the Ezrahite cries out day and night in deep despair, feeling forsaken by God and overwhelmed by "terrors."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Honest Despair: This psalm shows that a believer can experience profound darkness and still be a child of God. It ends without a "happy" resolution, validating the reality of prolonged grief.
2. Crying Day and Night: Persistence in prayer is not defined by how we feel, but by the direction of our cry (v. 1).

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry. Amen.
