Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 6 is the first of the penitential psalms. David cries out in deep distress and physical weakness, asking for mercy and healing, and asserting that God has heard the voice of his weeping.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Voice of Weeping: God hears our tears as well as our words (v. 8). Weeping is a form of prayer that moves the heart of the Almighty.
2. Seeking Mercy in Affliction: David asks not to be rebuked in anger. In our pain, we should appeal to God’s mercy rather than His justice.
3. Hope in the Grave: David asks who shall give God thanks in the pit (v. 5), showing a desire to live and continue praising God on earth.

FORMAL PRAYER

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, for we are weak. Heal our souls and our bodies, and receive our prayer, that our enemies may be ashamed and we may live to praise Thee. Amen.
