Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 31 is a prayer of trust in the midst of distress. David commits his spirit into God’s hand, a phrase later used by Jesus on the cross, and praises God for His "marvellous kindness."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Committing the Spirit: "Into thine hand I commit my spirit" (v. 5). This is the ultimate act of surrender for both life and death.
2. A Large Room: God does not shut us up in the hand of the enemy but sets our feet in a "large room" (v. 8). God provides freedom and space for the soul.
3. The Goodness of God: God has "laid up" great goodness for those who fear Him (v. 19). It is a treasure waiting to be revealed.

FORMAL PRAYER

In Thee, O Lord, do we put our trust; let us never be ashamed. Into Thine hand we commit our spirits, for Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Amen.
