Psalms 79 Study & Commentary

Psalm 79 is a lament over the defilement of Jerusalem. The psalmist asks "how long?" and pleads for God to purge away sins for His name's sake.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. For Thy Name’s Sake: Our strongest plea for mercy is not our merit, but God’s reputation (v. 9).
2. The Sighing of the Prisoner: God hears the "sighing of the prisoner" (v. 11). No one is too low for His notice.

FORMAL PRAYER

Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for Thy name's sake. Amen.
