Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 40 records David’s deliverance from a "horrible pit." It speaks of a new song in his mouth and expresses the desire to do God’s will, a theme applied to Christ in the New Testament.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Patient Waiting: David waited patiently, and God "inclined" unto him (v. 1). Deliverance often requires a season of steadfast waiting.
2. A New Song: God takes us out of the miry clay and puts a new song of praise in our mouths. Our testimony of deliverance serves to draw others to trust God.
3. I Delight to do Thy Will: Obedience is better than sacrifice (v. 6-8). The ultimate goal of the believer is to have God’s law written "within the heart."

FORMAL PRAYER

Make haste to help us, O Lord! We thank Thee for pulling us out of the horrible pit and setting our feet upon a Rock. Let Thy will be our greatest delight today. Amen.
