Psalms 137 Study & Commentary

Psalm 137 is a lament by the rivers of Babylon, expressing the sorrow of the exiles who cannot sing the Lord’s song in a strange land and their longing for Jerusalem.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Faith in Exile: "How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?" (v. 4). Maintaining our identity in a hostile culture is a challenge for every believer.
2. Preferring Jerusalem: God’s kingdom must be our "chief joy" (v. 6).

FORMAL PRAYER

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. Remember us, O Lord, in our affliction. Amen.
