Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 13 is a classic example of a lament moving to trust. David begins with "How long wilt thou forget me?" but ends with "I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Struggle with Silence: It is biblically normal to feel that God has hidden His face (v. 1). We should bring these honest feelings to Him in prayer.
2. Lighten Mine Eyes: We need God to "lighten our eyes" (v. 3) so we don't sleep the sleep of death or despair in our trials.
3. Trusting in Mercy: The bridge from despair to joy is trusting in God’s mercy (v. 5). Focus on His past faithfulness to find strength for the present.

FORMAL PRAYER

How long, O Lord? Lighten our eyes, lest we sleep the sleep of death. We trust in Thy mercy and our hearts shall rejoice in Thy salvation. Amen.
