O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Psalms 139 Study & Commentary

Psalm 139 is a profound meditation on God’s omniscience and omnipresence. David marvels that God knows his every thought and has fashioned him in the womb.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God Knows Everything: There is not a word in my tongue, but "thou knowest it altogether" (v. 4). This should lead to both comfort and holy living.
2. Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: Our value is rooted in the fact that God personally "wove" us in our mother’s womb (v. 14-15).
3. Search Me, O God: The psalm ends with an invitation for God to search the heart and lead us in the way everlasting.

FORMAL PRAYER

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.
