Psalms 83 Study & Commentary

Psalm 83 is a communal lament seeking God’s intervention against a confederacy of nations (Edom, Ishmaelites, Moab, etc.) that aim to cut off the name of Israel.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Goal of God’s Judgment: The prayer is that enemies are confounded *so that* men may know that God alone is the Most High over all the earth (v. 18).
2. God’s Silence: Like the psalmist, we cry "keep not thou silence, O God" (v. 1) during times of national or personal threat.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, keep not thou silence: hold not thy peace. Let men know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Amen.
