Chapter Study & Analysis

Psalm 38 is a heavy penitential psalm. David describes his physical suffering and emotional turmoil as a result of his sin, pleading for God not to forsake him.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Burden of Sin: Sin is described as a "heavy burden" too heavy to bear (v. 4). Only confession and God’s grace can lift the weight of guilt.
2. Honesty in Suffering: David is "troubled" and "bowed down greatly" (v. 6). The Bible allows us to be raw and honest about the pain our own choices cause.
3. Fleeing to the Savior: David ends with "Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation" (v. 22). The goal of guilt is to drive us to the Lord.

FORMAL PRAYER

Forsake us not, O Lord: O our God, be not far from us. Make haste to help us, O Lord our salvation, for we confess our iniquities before Thee. Amen.
