Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 9 Study & Commentary

The Prince of Peace: A transition from darkness to great light. This chapter contains the exalted titles of the Messiah: Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Davidic Throne: The Messiah's government is eternal and based on judgment and justice (v. 7).
2. High Messianic Titles: Verse 6 asserts the full deity of the child to be born (The mighty God).
3. Unrelenting Judgment: The refrain about God's hand being stretched out still shows persistent wrath against pride.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Hope in Darkness: The shadow of death is not the end for those upon whom the Light (Christ) shines.
2. Divine Zeal: The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. God is committed to His Kingdom.
