Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Isaiah 50 Study & Commentary

Isaiah 50 - The Obedient Servant: God asks where the "bill of divorcement" is, proving He hasn't abandoned Israel. The Servant describes His own suffering (giving His "back to the smiters") and His unwavering trust in God's help.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Suffering Servant: Verse 6 is a clear prophecy of the passion of Christ (shame, spitting, smiting).
2. The Tongue of the Learned: The purpose of the Servant's wisdom is to "speak a word in season to him that is weary" (v. 4).
3. Justification: "He is near that justifieth me" (v. 8). The Servant's confidence in God's legal vindication.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Walking in Darkness: "Who is among you... that walketh in darkness... let him trust in the name of the Lord" (v. 10). Faith is for the "dark" seasons.
2. Consistency: Setting one's face "like a flint" (v. 7) in the face of opposition.
