Chapter Study & Analysis

The Sign of Immanuel: During the Syro-Ephraimite war, Ahaz is told to trust God. Though Ahaz refuses to ask for a sign, God gives the great prophecy: A virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Incarnational Prophecy: Verse 14 is the foundational Messianic sign—God with us.
2. Faith vs. Politics: If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established (v. 9). Security depends on faith.
3. The Humiliation of the Proud: The very Assyria Ahaz trusted would become the razor that strips the land.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Trust in Crisis: God offers peace in the midst of smoking firebrands.
2. Divine Signs: God's plans are larger than current political threats; Immanuel is the ultimate answer.
