Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 47 - The Fall of the Virgin Daughter of Babylon: A taunt-song against the pride of Babylon. She is stripped of her "lady" status because of her cruelty and her trust in sorceries and "monthly prognosticators."

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Judgment of Cruelty: Babylon is punished because she showed "no mercy" to God's heritage (v. 6).
2. The Sin of "I Am": Babylon's claim, "I am, and none else beside me" (v. 8), is a blasphemous imitation of God's own self-revelation.
3. Failure of the Occult: The "astrologers" and "stargazers" are shown to be unable to save anyone from the coming fire.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Danger of Arrogance: Thinking "I shall be a lady for ever" leads to sudden ruin.
2. The Limits of Human Wisdom: Secular "prognostications" are useless against the moral decrees of God.
