Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 31 - The Folly of Egypt: A final warning against going down to Egypt for help. God contrasts the "flesh" of Egyptian horses with the "spirit" of His own power, promising that He will defend Jerusalem like a hovering bird.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Flesh vs. Spirit: "The Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit" (v. 3). A fundamental ontological distinction.
2. Divine Protection: God as a lion and as birds hovering (v. 4-5) illustrates both His fierce strength and His tender care for Zion.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Source of Help: Relying on human technology or alliances over God is a spiritual "downward" move.
2. Turning to the Deeply Revolted: A call for Israel to return to Him from whom they have deeply revolted.
