Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Isaiah 64 - Rend the Heavens: A passionate communal lament, pleading for God to "rend the heavens" and come down. The prophet confesses that all human righteousness is as "filthy rags" and yields to God as the "Potter."
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. Total Depravity: "All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" (v. 6). Even our best works are stained by sin when compared to God's holiness.
2. Unseen Wonders: God prepares things for those who wait for Him that no eye has seen or ear heard (v. 4; cf. 1 Cor 2:9).
3. The Potter and the Clay: A final submission to God's sovereignty—"we are the clay, and thou our potter" (v. 8).
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Radical Dependence: Acknowledging that we "fade as a leaf" without the sustaining power of God.
2. Surrender to Process: Trusting the "Potter" to shape our lives, even through the pressure of trials.
