Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 40 - Comfort My People: The prologue to the second half of Isaiah. A voice cries in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord. It exalts God's incomparable majesty against the idols and concludes with the promise of strength for the weary.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Consolation (Nachamu): "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people" (v. 1). God's heart is to restore His people after judgment.
2. The Incomparable Creator: God "sitteth upon the circle of the earth" (v. 22). He is totally transcendent over nations and idols.
3. Word Endurance: "The word of our God shall stand for ever" (v. 8) contrasted with the "grass" of human life.
4. The Good Shepherd: God gathers the lambs with His arm and carries them in His bosom (v. 11).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Waiting on the Lord: Those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength (v. 31). Waiting is active trust, not passive idleness.
2. The Antidote to Fear: Looking at the "stars" and the "circle of the earth" to remember how large our God is compared to our problems.
