Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 29 - The Siege of Ariel: A prophecy against Jerusalem (Ariel) describing its deep distress and sudden deliverance. God rebukes the people for their externalism ("honoureth me with their lips, but have removed their heart far from me").

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Spiritual Blindness: God has poured out a "spirit of deep sleep" upon those who refuse to see (v. 10). The Word becomes like a "sealed book."
2. The Potter and the Clay: The absurdity of the creation (man) questioning the Creator’s wisdom (v. 16).
3. Transformation: The promise that the "deaf shall hear the words of the book" and the "meek shall increase their joy" (v. 18-19).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Heart Worship: Guarding against "learnt by rote" religion. God desires the heart, not just the lips.
2. Wonder and Awe: Recognizing God’s "marvellous work" that confounds human wisdom.
