Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Isaiah 48 - Refined in the Furnace: God rebukes Israel for their obstinacy and hypocrisy. He explains that He delayed His wrath for His own name's sake and refined them in the "furnace of affliction," urging them to leave Babylon.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. Refinement: "I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction" (v. 10). God uses suffering to purge dross from His people.
2. The Trinitarian Hint: "The Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me" (v. 16). A glimpse of the plural personality of the Godhead.
3. The Missed Peace: "O that thou hadst hearkened... then had thy peace been as a river" (v. 18). Peace is linked to obedience.

PRACTICAL LESSONS
