Chapter Study & Analysis

The Vision of the Thrice-Holy God: Isaiah's commission in the year King Uzziah died. He sees the Lord on a high throne. After his lips are purged by a coal from the altar, he is sent with a message of judgment.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Trisagion: Holy, holy, holy (v. 3). The repetition emphasizes the absolute holiness of God.
2. The Prophetic Purge: Isaiah's Woe is me illustrates that the closer a man gets to God, the more he perceives his own depravity.
3. The Judicial Blinding: A decree where the preaching serves to seal the judgment of the unrepentant.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Altar's Provision: Our iniquity is taken away only through the live coal (atonement) from God's altar.
2. Availability: Here am I; send me. True service begins with a surrendered heart.
