Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 46 - The Burden of Bel and Nebo: Contrast between the idols of Babylon (Bel and Nebo), which must be "carried" by weary beasts, and Jehovah, who "carries" His people from the womb to old age.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Carrying God: A beautiful metaphor of God as a parent who sustains His people throughout their entire lifespan (v. 3-4).
2. The Impotence of Idols: Idols are a burden to the worshiper; Jehovah removes the burden from the worshiper.
3. The Unchanging Purpose: "My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure" (v. 10).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Resting in Providence: If God has carried us in the past, He is faithful to carry us even to "hoar hairs" (old age).
2. Differentiating Faiths: Is your religion something you have to "carry," or is it the God who carries you?
