Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 57 - The Contrite Heart: The chapter contrasts the death of the righteous (who find rest) with the restless life of the wicked. God declares He dwells in the "high and holy place" but also with the "contrite and humble spirit."

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Divine Immanence and Transcendence: God is both "The High and Lofty One" and the companion of the broken-hearted (v. 15).
2. The Futility of Idolatry: A vivid rebuke of those who find life in "the strength of their hand" instead of God.
3. No Peace for the Wicked: The wicked are like the "troubled sea" that cannot rest, casting up mire and dirt (v. 20).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Value of Humility: The way "up" to God's presence is "down" through contrition.
2. Seeking True Healing: Only God can "heal" the soul and restore comforts to the mourners.
