Chapter Study & Analysis

The Axe and the Woodsman: God uses Assyria as the rod of his anger to punish Israel. However, because Assyria boasts of its own power, God promises to punish the stout heart of the king of Assyria.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Instrumental Use of Evil: God uses wicked nations for His purposes without being the author of their sin.
2. The Remnant's Return: A remnant shall return (Shear-jashub). The return is both physical and spiritual.
3. Divine Sarcasm: Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? highlights the absurdity of pride.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Perspective in Suffering: Recognizing that difficult circumstances might be a rod of discipline.
2. Confidence in the Remnant: God always preserves a core of the faithful.
