Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 23 - The Burden of Tyre: A prophecy concerning the destruction of the great commercial center of Tyre. Its pride in its antiquity and wealth is brought low by Jehovah, though after seventy years, its "hire" will be holiness to the Lord.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Judgment on Commercial Pride: God purposed to "stain the pride of all glory" (v. 9). Wealth and trade are under His sovereign control.
2. The Sanctification of Profit: A future promise that the commerce of Tyre will eventually be dedicated to the service of God (v. 18).
3. Universal Dominion: Even the "merchant city" must submit to the decree of the Lord of hosts.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Detachment from Wealth: Realizing that global markets and "crowning cities" can vanish overnight by divine decree.
2. The Purpose of Resources: Wealth finds its highest value when it is "holiness to the Lord."
