Chapter Study & Analysis

Isaiah 63 - The Winepress of Wrath: A vision of the Lord coming from Edom with dyed garments, having trodden the winepress of judgment alone. This is followed by a heartfelt prayer of the people, remembering God's past mercies and pleading for His return.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Solitary Warrior: "I have trodden the winepress alone" (v. 3). Divine judgment is executed by the Lord Himself; no human power can assist.
2. The Holy Spirit Grieved: A rare Old Testament mention of "vexing" or grieving the Holy Spirit (v. 10).
3. Fatherhood of God: "Doubtless thou art our father" (v. 16). An appeal to God's covenant fatherhood despite the people's failures.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Seriousness of Sin: Rebellion turns God from a Friend into an "enemy" who fights against us.
2. Appealing to Mercy: When we are "hardened," our only hope is to cry out for God's "returning" grace.
