Isaiah 39 Study & Commentary

Isaiah 39 - The Babylonian Envoys: Hezekiah pridefully shows the treasures of his house to the envoys from Babylon. Isaiah rebukes him and prophesies that everything shown will eventually be carried away to Babylon.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Trap of Pride: After a great victory and healing, Hezekiah falls into the subtle sin of seeking human admiration.
2. The Prophetic Word of Exile: The first explicit mention of the Babylonian captivity (v. 6), showing that even the "good" king's failure has consequences.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Vigilance in Success: We are often in more danger after a miracle than during a crisis.
2. The Weight of Influence: What we "show" the world should be God's glory, not our own achievements.
