Chapter Study & Analysis

Joseph, being 17, is loved by Jacob more than all his brethren, who gives him a coat of many colours. Joseph dreams that his brothers and parents will bow to him, increasing their hatred. His brothers conspire against him, cast him into a pit, and sell him to Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver. Jacob is led to believe Joseph was devoured by an evil beast.
1. The Cost of Favoritism: Jacob’s open favoritism fueled the fire of envy in the family.
2. Envy is Deadly: "Who is able to stand before envy?" It can lead brothers to do unthinkable things.
3. God’s Unfolding Plan: Even in the pit and the sale, God was moving Joseph toward his destiny.
