Chapter Study & Analysis

Abraham dies and is buried by Isaac and Ishmael. Rebekah, after being barren, conceives twins. The LORD tells her, "the elder shall serve the younger." Esau is born first, then Jacob. Later, Esau faints from hunger and sells his birthright to Jacob for a mess of pottage.
1. Valuing Spiritual Things: Esau despised his birthright for temporary satisfaction, warning us not to trade eternal blessings for worldly pleasure.
2. God’s Election: God’s purposes often bypass human traditions of seniority.
3. The Consequence of Impulse: Decisions made in a moment of "fainting" can have lifelong consequences.
