Chapter Study & Analysis

Jacob fears meeting Esau and sends messengers with presents. Alone at night by the brook Jabbok, a Man wrestles with him until the breaking of the day. Jacob refuses to let go unless he is blessed. His name is changed to Israel (a prince with God). Jacob names the place Peniel, for he saw God face to face.
1. Persistence in Prayer: "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me." We must be earnest in seeking God.
2. Brokenness precedes Blessing: God touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh, showing that our human strength must be broken for His spiritual strength to prevail.
3. A New Identity: God transforms the "Supplanter" (Jacob) into a "Prince" (Israel).
