Chapter Study & Analysis

The whole earth was of one language and one speech. In pride, men sought to build a city and a tower "whose top may reach unto heaven" to make themselves a name. God confounded their language and scattered them abroad. The chapter ends with the genealogy of Shem leading to Terah, the father of Abram.
1. The Danger of Pride: Human unity without God leads to rebellion and judgment.
2. God’s Intervention: God confuses the languages not out of fear, but to restrain man’s capacity for evil.
