Chapter Study & Analysis

God speaks the Ten Commandments (the Decalogue) directly to the people: 1. No other gods. 2. No graven images. 3. Name not in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath. 5. Honor parents. 6. No murder. 7. No adultery. 8. No stealing. 9. No false witness. 10. No coveting. The people, terrified, plead for Moses to speak to them instead of God.
1. The Moral Compass: These laws are not suggestions; they are the eternal reflection of God’s own character.
2. Love for God and Neighbor: The first four commands deal with our relationship upward; the last six deal with our relationship outward.
3. The Need for a Mediator: The people’s fear shows that sinful man cannot stand before a holy God without a mediator (pointing to Christ).
