Chapter Study & Analysis

The eighth plague brings locusts that cover the face of the earth, eating every herb. The ninth plague brings "thick darkness" over Egypt for three days—a darkness that could be felt—while the children of Israel had light in their dwellings. Pharaoh refuses to let the children or cattle go.
1. Darkness over Idolatry: The plague of darkness was a direct judgment on Ra, the sun god of Egypt.
2. Light in the Midst of Gloom: While the world sits in spiritual darkness, the people of God walk in the light of His presence.
3. The Stubbornness of the Will: Pharaoh would rather see his country destroyed than submit to God, illustrating the ultimate irrationality of sin.
