Overview
At Rephidim, the people thirst and chide Moses. God commands Moses to smite the rock in Horeb, and water gushes out. Then Amalek attacks. Moses holds up his rod with the help of Aaron and Hur, while Joshua fights. Moses builds an altar: Jehovah-nissi.
Practical Lessons
1. The Smitten Rock: The rock is Christ (1 Cor 10:4), who was struck so that the living water of the Spirit could flow to us.
2. Power of Intercession: Victory in the valley (Joshua) depended on the uplifted hands on the mountain (Moses).
3. The Lord our Banner: Jehovah-nissi reminds us that our victory is found in God’s identity, not our own strength.
