Then Job answered and said,

I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?

If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.

Job 9 Study & Commentary

Job 9 is Job’s response to Bildad. He acknowledges God’s immense power and wisdom, but despairs because he feels there is no "daysman" (mediator) to stand between a holy God and a sinful man.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Majesty of the Creator: Job describes God moving mountains and making the constellations (v. 5-9). A right view of God’s power is the beginning of true wisdom.
2. The Need for a Mediator: "Neither is there any daysman betwixt us" (v. 33). This is a prophetic cry for Jesus Christ, our great Mediator who bridges the gap between us and God.
3. God’s Ways are Higher: We cannot "answer" God or justify ourselves before Him based on our own merit. We need His mercy, not just His justice.

FORMAL PRAYER

We thank Thee, O Father, for providing the "Daysman" in Jesus Christ. Thank Thee that we do not have to stand before Thy majesty alone, but are covered by His righteousness. Amen.
