Job 28 Study & Commentary

Job 28 is a poetic masterpiece on the source of wisdom. Job describes man’s ability to mine for gold and silver, but notes that "the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Search for Wisdom: Man can find hidden treasures in the earth, but wisdom is harder to find (v. 1-12). We must prioritize spiritual understanding over material wealth.
2. The Price of Wisdom: It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir or precious onyx (v. 16). The most valuable things in life are those that money cannot buy.
3. The Definition of Wisdom: "The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding" (v. 28). This is the fundamental principle of the entire book of Job.

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us that wisdom which is found only in Thee, O Lord. Teach us to fear Thy Name and to depart from evil, for this is the beginning of all true understanding. Amen.
