Job 21 Study & Commentary
Job 21 is Job’s counter-argument regarding the wicked. He points out that many wicked people live long, prosper, and die in peace, challenging the simplistic "retribution theology" of his friends.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Mystery of Prosperity: We must not equate financial success with God’s approval (v. 7-13). Sometimes the wicked prosper in this world, but their judgment is eternal.2. God’s Sovereign Timing: God distributes "sorrows in his anger" according to His own schedule, not ours. We cannot judge God’s justice by a single chapter of a person’s life.
3. Honest Observation: Job teaches us to look at reality as it is, not just as our traditions say it should be. Truth requires us to acknowledge life’s complexities.
