Chapter Study & Analysis

Job 8 contains the first speech of Bildad. He takes a more rigid stance than Eliphaz, suggesting that Job’s children died for their sins and that if Job were pure, God would restore him immediately.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Trap of Legalism: Bildad’s theology was a simple "if/then" formula (v. 6). Life with God is a relationship, not a mathematical equation.
2. The Vanity of the Hypocrite: Bildad correctly notes that the hope of the hypocrite shall perish (v. 13), but wrongly applies it to Job.
3. Searching History: He points Job to the wisdom of the "former age" (v. 8). While tradition is valuable, it must be balanced with the current revelation of God’s Spirit.

FORMAL PRAYER

Deliver us, Lord, from a cold and rigid theology. Help us to see the person behind the problem and to minister with grace rather than with judgment. Amen.
