Chapter Study & Analysis

Job 5 continues Eliphaz’s counsel. He encourages Job to commit his cause to God, describing God as one who corrects those He loves and promising restoration if Job repents.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God’s Sovereignty in Correction: While Eliphaz was wrong about Job’s sin, he was right that "happy is the man whom God correcteth" (v. 17). We should value God’s discipline.
2. Trusting the Deliverer: God can deliver from six troubles and seven (v. 19). No situation is too complex for God’s intervention.
3. The Goal of Restoration: God wounds but His hands also make whole. We must look past the pain to the healing that God intends to bring.

FORMAL PRAYER

We commit our cause to Thee, O God. Wound us where we need healing, and bind us up by Thy grace, that we may come forth as gold from the furnace. Amen.
