Chapter Study & Analysis

Job 14 contains Job’s reflection on the frailty of life. He compares man to a flower that withers and asks the famous question: "If a man die, shall he live again?"

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Brevity of Life: "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble" (v. 1). This perspective should lead us to value every moment and seek eternal foundations.
2. The Hope of Resurrection: Job hints at a hope that God will "call" and he will "answer" from the grave (v. 15). This points toward the promise of eternal life.
3. God’s Precise Counting: God counts our steps and watches over our sin (v. 16). We live in the sight of a God who is intimately aware of every detail of our existence.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. We thank Thee for the hope that death is not the end for those who trust in Thee. Amen.
