And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

Job 2 Study & Commentary

Job 2 sees Satan’s second challenge: Job’s health. God allows Satan to strike Job with boils. His wife suggests he curse God, but Job refuses. His three friends arrive and sit in silence with him for seven days.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Rejecting Bitter Counsel: Even those closest to us may give counsel that leads away from God in times of pain (v. 9). we must discern between human emotion and divine truth.
2. The Ministry of Silence: Sometimes the best support we can give to the suffering is simply being present without speaking (v. 13). Silence is often more comforting than hollow explanations.
3. Physical vs. Spiritual Health: Our spiritual integrity is more valuable than our physical comfort. Job accepted "evil" (adversity) from God’s hand as well as "good."

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us patience, O Lord, in the midst of physical suffering. Help us to guard our lips and our hearts, that we may not sin against Thee when life is most painful. Amen.
