Chapter Study & Analysis

Job 40 continues God’s challenge. He asks if Job can humble the proud or control the Behemoth, a creature of immense strength that God created along with man.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Abhorring Oneself: Job’s response to God is: "Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee?" (v. 4). A true encounter with God leads to genuine humility.
2. The Power of God’s Creatures: If man cannot control the "Behemoth," how can he expect to control or counsel the Creator of such beings? (v. 15-24).
3. The Futility of Self-Justification: Trying to make God wrong to make ourselves right is a dangerous path. We must trust God’s justice even when it is silent.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, we lay our hands upon our mouths. We acknowledge our vileness and Thy holiness. Teach us to trust Thy justice without demanding an explanation for every trial. Amen.
