Job 11 Study & Commentary

Job 11 introduces Zophar the Naamathite. He accuses Job of being a "man full of talk" and suggests that God is actually punishing Job less than his iniquity deserves. He tells Job that if he repents, his life will be brighter than noonday.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Arrogance in Truth: Zophar spoke of God’s wisdom correctly but used it as a club to beat a suffering man (v. 7-12). Truth without love is not divine.
2. God’s Unsearchable Depth: "Canst thou by searching find out God?" Zophar reminds us of the transcendence of God, even if his application to Job was wrong.
3. Simplistic Solutions: Zophar offers a "quick fix" through repentance (v. 14-15), ignoring the complexity of Job’s trial.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, keep our tongues from harsh judgments. Help us to marvel at Thy unsearchable wisdom and to speak words of grace to those who walk in darkness. Amen.
