Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 1 opens with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, legalizing His claim to the throne of David and the covenant of Abraham. It concludes with the angelic announcement to Joseph and the virginal conception, fulfilling the prophecy of Immanuel.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God of the Outcasts: The inclusion of women like Rahab and Ruth in the genealogy shows that God’s grace transcends past failures and ethnic boundaries.
2. The God Who Is With Us: "Immanuel" (v. 23) means God is not distant. In every trial, the believer has the assurance of His immediate presence.
3. Obedience in Shadow: Joseph’s silent obedience (v. 24) is a model for acting on God’s word even when it brings social stigma.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of Abraham and David, who in the fullness of time didst send Thy Son to be born of a Virgin: we thank Thee for the gift of Immanuel. Grant us the faith of Joseph, to obey Thy commands without hesitation, and the joy of knowing that Thou art ever with us. Amen.
