Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Matthew 6 addresses the practice of piety—almsgiving, prayer, and fasting—warning against hypocrisy. It includes the Lord’s Prayer and commands the disciples to seek first the Kingdom of God, trusting Him for all material needs.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Audience of One: Our spiritual disciplines should be done in secret for the Father (v. 4-6). Performing for human applause destroys the spiritual value of the act.
2. The Pattern of Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer (v. 9-13) prioritizes God’s glory and will over our personal petitions. It is a blueprint for a balanced spiritual life.
3. Freedom from Anxiety: Worry is a symptom of misplaced trust (v. 25). By seeking the Kingdom first, we align ourselves with the Provider who cares for the birds and the lilies.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Our Father, which art in heaven: hallowed be Thy name. Deliver us from the hypocrisy of seeking human praise and from the heavy burden of worldly anxiety. Teach us to trust Thy providence and to seek Thy Kingdom above all else. Amen.
