Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 9 continues the record of Christ’s authority through the healing of the paralytic, the calling of Matthew, and the raising of Jairus’ daughter. It highlights the Pharisaic opposition and Christ’s compassion for the shepherdless crowds.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Great Physician: Jesus came for the sick, not the "righteous" (v. 12). He seeks those who recognize their need for spiritual and moral healing.
2. Mercy over Sacrifice: God desires a heart of compassion more than ritualistic perfection (v. 13). Our religion must result in kindness toward the "tax collectors and sinners."
3. The Lord of the Harvest: Jesus calls us to pray for laborers because the harvest is plenteous (v. 37). We are not just spectators; we are called to intercede and participate in His mission.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Compassionate Savior, who didst look upon the multitudes with pity: send forth laborers into Thy harvest. Heal our infirmities and call us from our "receipt of custom" to follow Thee. Teach us the meaning of mercy in all our dealings. Amen.
