Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 4 records the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness and the beginning of His Galilean ministry. Jesus defeats Satan through the Word of God and calls His first disciples to become "fishers of men."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Weapon of the Word: Jesus answered every temptation with "It is written" (v. 4). Mastery of Scripture is our primary defense against the deceptions of the enemy.
2. Immediate Discipleship: Peter and Andrew left their nets "straightway" (v. 20). Following Christ often requires an immediate and decisive break from our old priorities.
3. Light in Darkness: Jesus’ ministry in Galilee fulfilled the prophecy of a great light rising (v. 16). No matter how dark a region or heart may be, the Gospel has the power to illuminate it.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights: strengthen us in our hour of temptation. Teach us to live by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, and make us faithful fishers of men in Thy service. Amen.
