Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 14 records the martyrdom of John the Baptist, the feeding of the five thousand, and Jesus walking on the water. These events demonstrate Christ’s compassion for the hungry and His absolute sovereignty over the elements of nature.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Consecrated Scarcity: Jesus took five loaves and two fishes and multiplied them (v. 19). When we bring our meager resources to Him, His blessing makes them more than sufficient for the need.
2. Faith in the Storm: Peter began to sink only when he looked at the wind instead of Jesus (v. 30). Our stability in crisis depends entirely on the focus of our spiritual vision.
3. Solitude and Service: Despite His grief over John, Jesus continued to serve (v. 14), yet He also prioritized prayer in solitude (v. 23). We must balance public mission with private communion.

FORMAL PRAYER

Compassionate Lord, who didst feed the hungry in a desert place: bless the little we have that it may suffice for many. When the winds of life are contrary, reach out Thy hand and save us. Teach us to walk upon the waves of our fears by keeping our eyes fixed on Thee. Amen.
