Malachi 4 Study & Commentary

Malachi 4 - The Sun of Righteousness: The final chapter describes the "day that shall burn as an oven" for the proud, while for those who fear God’s name, the "Sun of righteousness" shall arise with healing in his wings. The Old Testament ends with a call to remember the Law and the promise of Elijah.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Sun of Righteousness (v. 2): A radiant Messianic prophecy of Christ bringing healing and light to the world.
2. Elijah the Prophet (v. 5): Predicting the coming of John the Baptist (confirmed by Jesus in Matthew 11:14) to turn hearts back before the "great and dreadful day."
3. The Curse: The OT ends with the word "curse," highlighting the need for the New Covenant to bring the ultimate blessing.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Waiting for the Dawn: No matter how dark the spiritual state of society, the "Sun" is coming for those who fear the Lord.
2. Legacy of the Heart: The mission of the "messenger" is to turn the hearts of fathers to children, emphasizing the importance of family restoration.
