Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 19 addresses questions regarding divorce and riches. Jesus affirms the sanctity of marriage and challenges a rich young ruler to prioritize the Kingdom over his possessions, stating the difficulty of the wealthy entering heaven.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Sanctity of Union: Jesus points back to creation to affirm that marriage is a divine institution (v. 4-6). We must guard the covenantal bonds that God has joined together.
2. The Danger of Wealth: Riches can become an idol that prevents us from following Christ (v. 22-24). We must hold our possessions loosely, recognizing that they belong to God.
3. The Reward of Sacrifice: Those who leave everything for Christ are promised a hundredfold return (v. 29). God is no man’s debtor; His generosity always exceeds our sacrifice.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of the Covenant, who didst join man and woman in the beginning: strengthen our homes and hearts. Deliver us from the love of money, which is the root of all evil. Grant that we may forsake all to follow Thee, trusting in Thy promise of eternal life. Amen.
