Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 27 records the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, His trial before Pilate, the release of Barabbas, and His burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. It is the narrative of the ultimate substitutionary sacrifice where the curtain of the Temple is rent.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Choice of Barabbas: The crowd chose a rebel over the Redeemer (v. 21). We face a similar choice daily: will we follow the world’s way of power or Christ’s way of the Cross?
2. The Silence of the Lamb: Jesus remained silent before His accusers (v. 12-14). There is a time to entrust our defense to God rather than trying to justify ourselves through human words.
3. Access to the Father: The tearing of the veil (v. 51) signifies that through Christ’s death, the way into God’s presence is now open to all. We can approach the throne of grace with boldness.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Crucified Savior, who for our sins didst endure the shame and the cross: we adore Thee for Thy boundless love. By Thy stripes we are healed, and by Thy death the veil is rent. Grant us the grace to die unto sin and live unto righteousness in Thee. Amen.
